Bingham Launches Public Interest Fellowship With LAFLA

Press Release

LOS ANGELES (May 29, 2013) — Bingham announced today that it will fund a two-year public interest fellowship with Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA), one of the nation’s most prominent and respected legal-service organizations.

“This program enables Bingham to support an organization with a rich history of dedication and service to Southern California,” said Bingham Chairman Jay Zimmerman.

LAFLA is a nationally recognized and respected public service organization that has been providing civil legal services to poor and low-income people in Southern California for over 80 years.

“We have a very strong relationship with LAFLA and have worked with the organization for more than a decade,” said Debra Fischer, a partner in Bingham’s Los Angeles office and a member of the firm’s national Pro Bono Committee and LAFLA’s executive board. “The organization advocates on behalf of individuals in the core areas of interest for Bingham’s pro-bono practice, including children’s rights. We are happy to be partnering with LAFLA on this fellowship.”

The recipient of the LAFLA fellowship is Jeanne Nishimoto, who has been working with LAFLA as a staff attorney in its Government Benefits Unit since 2012. Nishimoto will focus on advocating for benefits on behalf of the relatives of children attempting to receive aid under Federal foster care programs. In California, state foster care aid is not available to relatives caring for a child, so qualifying for Federal aid is critical.

“Thanks to the Bingham fellowship I can concentrate on helping relatives of at risk children receive foster care benefits,” said Nishimoto. “This fellowship enables LAFLA to better serve the community by keeping families together and improving the lives of many vulnerable children throughout the region.”

Nishimoto will also train Bingham lawyers on foster care issues and serve as the coordinating counsel for cases that Bingham lawyers work on.

“Bingham has been extremely supportive of the efforts of LAFLA,” said Silvia Argueta, Executive Director of LAFLA. “We are incredibly grateful for their continued support and look forward to working with them to provide assistance to needy children and their families.”

The funding for the Bingham fellowships is derived from attorneys’ fees awarded to Bingham for its work on various pro bono matters. In 2012 Bingham introduced two similar, three-year fellowships with Bay Area Legal Aid, the San Francisco Bay Area’s largest poverty law firm, and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), which advances equality and civil rights, with a focus on health justice, disability rights and environmental justice. In 2013, Bingham plans on establishing an additional fellowship program in Washington D.C.

Bingham offers a broad range of market-leading practices focused on global financial services firms and Fortune 100 companies. The firm has more than 1,000 lawyers in 14 locations in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Follow the firm on Twitter

Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles Launches the Veterans Justice Center

Press Release

Former Bill Smith Homeless Veterans Project
Expands Services To Veterans And Their Families

Los Angeles, California – (February 5, 2013) – Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is pleased to announce the formation of the Veterans Justice Center (VJC). The VJC continues LAFLA’s commitment to veterans that began in 2000 when it formed the Bill Smith Homeless Veterans Project. The focus of the newly launched VJC is to protect low-income veterans and their families and to serve clients in all civil legal areas, including government benefits, housing and eviction defense, citation defense, family law, employment law, and other consumer law matters. The VJC will employ a holistic approach; combining the skills of attorneys and social workers working together to address the complex social and legal needs of veterans and their families.

LAFLA’s Executive Director Silvia Argueta states, “The VJC is strengthened by its collaborative design, benefiting from the skills of attorneys and social workers who advocate for veterans’ benefits and facilitate access to community services.  This design will address the legal and social needs of veterans.”

The VJC began as a joint project between LAFLA and the Inner City Law Center under the name of the Bill Smith Homeless Veterans Project in 2000 where attorneys filed Veterans benefits claims. As the need for veterans’ services has grown, so too, has the project.

Serving Our Veterans

Presently, there are 22 million veterans in the United States, many of whom face challenges as a result of their military service. Military veterans make up four percent (4%) of the adult population of Los Angeles County, an estimated 328,000 residents in 2010.  Unfortunately, the systems that have been established to support them often fail. When struggling veterans reach out to the VA for help, they are met with long waits, complicated bureaucracy and a backlogged benefits claims system. At VJC, an experienced team will advocate for veterans to receive the benefits they deserve, as well as provide them with a range of civil legal and social services.

“Our familiarity with the legal system and ability to assess the complex needs of veterans, combined with our knowledge of public and community-based resources allows VJC to identify the needs of veterans and provide them comprehensive service,” adds Nicole Perez, VA Certified, VJC staff attorney.

Educating The Next Generation of Advocates

VJC is committed to serving veterans while also training the next generation of veterans’ advocates. LAFLA currently partners with Loyola Law School to train law students on veterans’ advocacy needs and strategies, in addition to providing pro bono trainings and case placements with law firms throughout greater Los Angeles. LAFLA also plans to partner with local universities to offer internship opportunities to their Master of Social Work (MSW) students.

LAFLA is the frontline law firm for poor and low income people in Los Angeles County. Founded more than 80 years ago, LAFLA has six neighborhood offices, three Domestic Violence Clinics and four Self Help Legal Access Centers. LAFLA serves communities as diverse as East Los Angeles, the Westside, South Los Angeles, Pico-Union, Koreatown and Long Beach. LAFLA is the first place thousands of people turn to when they need legal assistance for a crisis that threatens their shelter, health and livelihood. The VJC can be reached by dialing 800.399.4529.

Nikon launches WR-10 radio-frequency camera trigger system in US

Jan 8, 2013 at 02:00:00 GMT ACCESSORY NEWS CAMERA-TRIGGER NIKON Share: Tweet Pin It Print view Email

Nikon US has announced a radio-frequency camera triggering system compatible with all its current DSLRs. The WR-10 system works over a 60m range and, unlike the current infrared system, does not require a line-of-sight between the trigger and the camera. Users of mass-market Nikons (D600 and below) can use the WR-T10 transmitter to focus or fire cameras with WR-R10 receivers attached to them. Owners of pro-grade DSLRs with 10-pin connectors can use the WR-A10 adapter to connect the R10 to their camera. This combination allows the camera to act as a host that can remotely trigger up to 64 other cameras.

The system was released in Europe in November, alongside the D5200.

Nikon launches 70-200mm f/4 VR telezoom with claimed 5-stop stabilization

Oct 24, 2012 at 04:01:00 GMT LENS NEWS NIKON Share: Tweet Pin It Print view Email

Nikon has launched the much-rumored AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR, a lighter and more affordable tele-zoom with a claimed 5 stops of image stabilization. This is delivered by what the company terms ‘third-generation VR,’ which we’re told is not a successor to VRII. The lens joins Nikon’s range of constant f/4 lenses, alongside the 16-35mm f/4 and 24-120mm f/4, and includes both nano crystal coating and a ring-type AF-S motor to give full-time manual focus override. At $1400 the lens is priced relatively closely to the Canon equivalent’s list price – as is the $224 optional tripod ring.
