Saturday Photography Project – Church

Saturday Photography Project – Church001 Jun 2013Saturday Photography Project – Church by Barry Chignell

Spent an hour or two at a local churchyard, taking some HDR images, today. It was one of the few nice days we’ve had here in the UK so I wanted to take advantage of the great light and blue skies.

My HDR Explained tutorial explains the HDR process used from start to finish.

All images were processed using 3 images at 2 stops, F16, ISO100.. The lens is an 8mm Fisheye from Samyang.

How To Properly Care For Your Photography Equipment

011 Mar 2013 by Mike Chase

It is often said that the things we own are just extensions of ourselves, so we can really tell a lot about a photographer by just looking at how he treats his equipment. There’s a long list of negative consequences when people fail to properly take care of their photography gear. Malfunction will be the result of poor maintenance, the lifespan of your equipment will be shortened, and their value will decrease as well.

Cleaning and caring for your photography gear will save you time and money in the long run. Having a care kit and observing a regular cleaning regimen is better than paying for the costs of going to camera shops for any required professional help. Today I will share with you some tips about how to properly care for your photography equipment.

An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure so let’s start with things that we can purchase to keep our gear looking and working as if it were brand new. A proper camera bag is needed for the correct transport of the camera body, the lens, and other things that we require when capturing images. You don’t really need an expensive container; an inexpensive camera bag will do as long as it is tough enough. If you are really interested in photography, you will soon find yourself investing in lenses and other photography paraphernalia. As your collection grows you will also upgrade your camera bag so do not invest in expensive bags that will only last for a couple of months.

Superb Examples Of 10 Stop Filter Photography

012 Mar 2013 by Barry Chignell

10 stop filters enable a photographer to almost slow down time.  Allowing the shutter speed to be increased to unnatural lengths of time (minutes rather than seconds) enables scenes to be transformed in many ways.  From turning a rough seascape into a serene, perfectly flat sheet of water, to ‘smearing’ clouds across the sky.

Photography Or Non-Photography Table Sir?

023 Jan 2013food photography, , restaurant ban on photography by Barry

According to a New York Times article, certain restaurants in the US have started to ban diners from photographing their meals.  Indeed, even though I love photography (no surprise there!), I am not a fan of photographing a meal purely because it’s there, and because you want to upload it to your blog or Pinterest.  I can understand why some people enjoy this as a hobby however, and why it would be irritating to be told you were not allowed to take a photo of food you had just paid (usually a lot) of money for.

Restaurants Ban Photography

The ruling in some establishments may well be born from the irritation caused to other diners from the incessant flashing of cameras during an otherwise gently lit experience.  If the restaurant receives enough complaints, then it would be foolish not to take action of some kind.

How long will it be, as with the old days where you were offered

Photography Opportunities Are All Around You, Everywhere, Every Day

1121 Jan 2013Every Day, Everywhere, Photography Opportunities Are All Around You by Barry

If you find yourself stuck indoors due to snow or bad weather in general, take a wonder around your house.  Every day objects that are so familiar, which you probably look at all the time, can make for very interesting subjects, especially close up.

All of the below images were taken using a Canon 60mm Macro lens.  I was going for an abstract feel using light and shadow, for some of the shots I have also applied filters within Photoshop.

The photos were taken using 1 lamp from above and an iPad with a Light Table app from beneath.

Liquid Art Photography – Patience And Timing Required

Liquid Art Photography – Patience And Timing Required209 Jan 2013Liquid Art Photography by Barry

Liquid art photography has been growing in popularity over the past couple of years.  One of the attractions of this genre of photography is the pure randomness of the images captured and the true reflection of the chaos theory.  It is relatively simple to set up a shoot for basic liquid art as I previously explained in my article ‘Abstract Water Images The Easy Way’, all you require for simple liquid art shots is the liquid (obviously), good lighting (flash or artificial studio lights) and camera settings adjusted to cope with the high speeds required.  The below examples would use a more sophisticated set of equipment.
